Archives - May 2003 (graduation ball)

Friday 0800

First thing I saw in the morning: a dummy being hung by the neck onto a lamp post, with inflated breasts.  Reminds me of someone (not in this school).

1 - She missed KGV so much that she killed herself

0803

The school provided us with McDonalds breakfasts.  Some had half while others had 5.  The soft drinks were more popular, but I personally can't stand them in mornings.

0820

Kept taking photos.  This phenomenon began on Monday, and won't stop until we actually go to our respective universities, when we will most likely never see each other again for eternity.

0945

Physics.  More photos.  The fact that people actually enjoy that overly sweet and dry chocolate cake violates Newton's fifteenth law.  Some played charades.  Won't they play something new?

1330

Water fight begins.  Everyone claims to form organized teams, which breaks down into civil war in 5 seconds.  I chose to sacrifice the pleasure of spraying water on those I don't like, so I could take some photos.  I still got a little wet though.  War is like a water fight - in the end everyone gets shot.

52 - After the water fight

1745

Went back home, rested, got prepared, and met Daniel Chan in Central MTR station.  Which happens to be right next to the hotel for the grad ball.  Wearing the suits feels so hot.  Something that the girls didn't have to put up with.

1830

Starting to get crowded.  Photo frenzy on an unprecedented level in KGV history.  Everyone's outfit looked so great compared to mine that I felt like leaving.

1900

Dinner.  Mr. and Mrs. blah blah blah went blegh blegh blegh, followed by lame lame lame games (the dancing bit's cool though) and well-rehearsed, high-quality performances as usual.  Liked the way Mr. Cocks incorporates the social-economic spectrum into his speech.

2200

Disco.  Everyone frantic to take class, subject and friendship photos.  Space is a scarce resource and conflict of interests becomes quite heated.  Most people ignored the disco until 10 minutes before mid-night.  Anyone see a pattern?

2400

Grad ball officially ends.  Those with outside partners or serious fatigue left, with the majority taking taxis to the after-party, at Club 'ing', situated on the forth floor of the plaza in the New Renaissance Hotel.

Saturday 0100

Our table got to the club.  Found a place to sit, and began drinking.  Some smoked, some chatted and others danced or did other club-like things.  It's scary that some look so natural and experienced in these places.  Eventually settled myself and started chatting + helping with photos.  Gave some coupons away, got some from who-knows-who.  Something hit me hard, and then I was very demoralized.  Started using my drink coupons.  In the end I had two vodka-sprites, one tequila, one Bloody Mary (which looked and tasted like something else, probably because they didn't actually have that drink), and a bottle of beer, for a total of 5 items.  Went to the washroom twice in 90 minutes, as well as 0.6 litres of water, to make sure I don't dehydrate.

0230

Many people dancing by now.  Lots of kissing, hugging and *ahem*.  Some people began to show signs of fatigue from alcohol.  Jacky slightly drunk, Bronson just a hint of drunkenness.  He is so sweet and innocent when he's drunk (hehehe).  Went to karaoke by taxis.

0300

Arrived at Newway.  Edwin and Josephina dominated the singing.  Carolyn almost sleeping though the whole thing.  Others chipped in for fun.  Later, we had Athens, and then Kenneth joining us towards the end.

89 - Getting tired already?

0500

Decided to leave.  Costs 59$ per person per hour, which is reasonable for the nice room.  Then Kenneth told us grave news.  Apparently, many people had too many drinks, especially the ones in small cups and the ones that were mixed with sweet liquids that disguised its alcohol content of over 40% (I swear it's the vodka-sprites).  He told us of how they were dragged to taxis and pushed back into hotel rooms. I have helped drunk people before in camps, but never in such masses.  So we went back to the hotel alert, even though were on the brink of exhaustion.

0510

Most people were in rooms already, with a few still wandering in terrible states.  It was only then that I could finally picture the extent of the chaos at its full force a couple of hours ago.  Brian, Abhishek, Daniel Chan, Hugh, Gary, and all the rest I haven't mentioned, thanks a lot.  Those that stand up for necessity instead of glory are the real heroes.  The most frightening thing is that alcohol hits those that are inexperienced harder than those that take a lot of it, the former of which also happens to be the elite of KGV.  The not-so-naive ones could, at least, slowly swing their bodies back to their rooms with their own effort.  I also noticed an interesting thing - the stereotypical 'drunk personality' that we see in movies is simply non-existent.  In truth, a drunk person still maintains his/her personality and the ability to recall long-term memory.  In other words, what they say during this state is anything BUT complete nonsense.  It's usually a direct or confused form of their desires or unhappiness from deep inside, often even too deep for him/herself to know.  And of course some of them were looked and acted so cutely!!!  Just wondering if anyone said they liked someone (no stupid comments about this okay?)

0515

Had a short nap, then woke up and went into deep thought.  I think the important thing is that they know how much (alcohol) they could enjoy before it becomes dangerous.  Whatever you learn from this, I want to stress that avoiding it completely as a result of this incident is not a sign of maturity.  Alcohol is a part of most people's lives, and handling it properly is a necessity.

0545

Went into room 802, an all-girls room.  I thought I'd interrupt their sleep, but turns out they couldn't anyway.  The harbour view was spectacular, even on a cloudy day, with two large, soft, warm and comfortable double beds for the thirteen of us.

91 - Kenneth Leung (top left) having some fun

0700

Breakfast at Starbucks.  A few individuals partially recovered from drinking effects and managed to limp with us.  It was then that the nostalgic effects were too poignant even for me.  You see, the older you get, the more unlikely you are going to make friends out of your heart and not out of alliances/money/whatever else.  Which means by the time you get to university, you're unlikely to meet true friends ever again.  Since I haven't made many friends during my time in KGV, it's unlikely that I'll ever have many friends in my life at all.  This is exactly what hurts me so much - a feeling that I pray no one else in KGV will experience or even understand.

0900

Went home in the MTR.  The good-byes were so light-hearted.  Which implies that we will see each other again during this and subsequent summer holidays, right?  Right?

Right?

Right?

Right?

Okay, you promised!
